My First Insulin Pump: The Best Decision I’ve Ever Made
Living with Type 1 diabetes means making countless decisions every single day. For years, I managed my diabetes using insulin pens because that was all I had ever known. I got used to the routine of multiple daily injections and thought it was simply part of life with diabetes.
Then I made one decision that completely changed my life.
I got my very first insulin pump.
Looking back now, I only wish I had done it sooner.
From Multiple Injections to One Device
Every single day used to revolve around insulin pens. Before every meal, every correction, every high blood sugar—I was reaching for a pen. Some days I was injecting myself five or more times, and after a while that becomes physically and mentally exhausting.
Now, instead of constantly injecting, I simply enter the carbohydrates I’m eating, confirm my bolus, and my pump takes care of the rest. It has made diabetes management feel so much less overwhelming.
Better Blood Sugars, Better Sleep
One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed is how much more stable my blood sugars are.
With insulin pens, I often felt like I was chasing my glucose levels. I’d correct a high, then worry about going low later. It could feel like an endless cycle.
The pump delivers tiny amounts of insulin throughout the day and night, which gives much more flexibility than a single long-acting insulin injection. I no longer have to take my nighttime basal insulin, and that alone has been a huge relief.
The biggest surprise?
I actually sleep better.
Knowing my pump is continuously helping manage my glucose gives me so much more confidence overnight. I wake up feeling more rested and less anxious about what happened while I was asleep.
Life Feels Easier
Diabetes will never take a day off, and an insulin pump isn’t a cure.
I still count carbohydrates.
I still monitor my glucose.
I still make decisions every day.
But those decisions feel easier now.
The pump has taken away so much of the constant stress that came with injections. It’s one less thing to think about every time I eat, and it helps me feel more in control of my diabetes instead of diabetes controlling me.
Was It Worth It?
Without a doubt, getting an insulin pump has been the best diabetes-related decision I’ve ever made. I am genuinely happier since making the switch. I feel more confident, I sleep better, and managing my diabetes feels so much less stressful than it did with insulin pens.
Everyone’s experience is different, and what works for me may not be the perfect solution for someone else. But for me, it has been life-changing.
If you’re currently using insulin pens and wondering whether an insulin pump is worth considering, I hope my experience encourages you to talk to your diabetes team. It might just be one of the best decisions you ever make, too.
Thank you for reading, and I’m excited to continue sharing my journey, tips, and experiences here.
